Internet connection speed -25%

Post by JayBee »

Today I flashed my WNDR3700 v1 modem from the stock image to the latest Gargoyle image. When I test the connection speed with my internet provider the speed is 25% lower than it was when running on the stock firmware. The speed dropped from app. 165 Mbps to app. 115 Mbps.

What could be the cause?

Stock images are made by the manufacturer SPECIFICALLY for each
router and tuned for each model of router.

Gargoyle is based on OpenWRT, which is made to run on MULTIPLE
types of routers, but not necessarily tuned for each router.

Besides that, you're adding more features that stock routers have.

More features = more RAM used and more CPU used.

Because of all this, almost always, when you flash 3rd party
firmware to a router, you will get less performance than
stock firmware.

Most users want the extra features though and don't have the huge
download bandwidth that you have, so will never notice it.

If the speed is important to you, you may have to stick with stock.

If you want all the extra features - try Gargoyle out and keep in mind
you will suffer a little bandwidth loss.

Over 25% is not a little.
however, wireles connectivity has significantly improved.
flashing back to stock seems to be a bit cumbersome.
I'll test a bit more....

I actually used to have that router, It's something to do with the WAN bandwidth tracking, I finally got fed up with it and went to OpenWRT. In my testing, it maxed out closer to 150 Mbps, so not perfect for your case, but closer. Although I don't remember how to do so, someone might be able to tell you how to disable bandwidth tracking to see if it helps. I do remember back in the 1.5.x days it broke QoS, quotas, and a few other things that I don't remember anymore.

Thnx for your reaction.

What is the easiest way to either reinstall the stock firmware or to replace Gargoyle by DD-WRT or OpenWRT?

I followed this instruction:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=79802

I am now running DD WRT and the internet connection speed is now 180 Mbps.
