QOS Not Seeming to Work

Post by bzowk »

Hey Guys -

Realize this may be a frequent topic, but have a quick question about QOS, please. I have QOS set up for download and upload for my home connection with Gargoyle. I do a lot of FTP downloading, but also need to have fast response time when doing basic web browsing (or wife gets upset :)) Occansionally, I use my Nvidia Shield over the internet which requires all the speed I can get.

The Issue
The issue is when I'm doing a lot of FTP downloading, browsing the web (HTTP) is still really slow. Shouldn't it be faster than not using QOS? Here's an overview of how I have it configured...

To accomodate all of this, I set up five classes as follows:
- Gamestream Set to 50% (has min RTT) 5120 min BW
- Fastest Set to 21%
- Faster Set to 17%
- Normal Set to 11%
- Slow Set to 2%

I have many rules which I can list, but 80% of them are for the Shield (Gamestream) as it requires numerous open TCP/UDP ports. Below are the ones that have to do with the issue:
- HTTP / Con Bytes 1024kb - Fastest
- HTTP - Faster
- FTP / Con Bytes 256kb - Fastest
- FTP - Normal

I have it in 2 rules for each so that web browsing and ftp directory listing would be fast; but downloading files from either would be put in a lower priority.

I watch the categories when having the issue and see some bytes fluctuate between them; but not enough to tell whats happening.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Yes it is a frequent topic. Did you read the Wiki, especially the part about ACK packets near the end?

Your post does not state a technical problem to work on so can't help you much. Make sure you state your problem in QoS terms per the Wiki and post screen shots if you want technical help.

Problems with your wife, well that is a different forum entirely my friend.
