Backblaze Backup Service & QoS

Post by pelowj »

Hi all,

I use a backup service called blackblaze. Unfortunately, however, I only have about 600kbps upstream. Currently I am using gargoyle QoS to ensure my VoIP even when a backup is uploading and it's working great.

The problem is that backblaze seems to be using port 80 to transfer the data and, is for the most part, getting put in the fast queue; something which slows web browsing to a crawl.

Can anyone think of any way to differentiate the backblaze traffic?

As a side note, I've been wondering are ACK packets prioritised by default? What rule should be added to prioritise them?

Beirigí bua,

Does blackblaze stream to a particular IP in which case you could add IP(s) for your blackblaze class.

For anyone that's interested, I used the following rules to identify Backblaze:

Destination IP: 208.87.220.0/24, Destination Port: 443, Slow
Destination IP: 173.239.79.0/24, Destination Port: 443, Slow

Thanks again, Tals.

Nice one :) out of interest does that sort out your original problem of slow browsing, I understand how qos works for different machines - never quite understand how it handles this when the traffic is on the same machine.

If it does work I'd love to know steams ip address for downloads as that is the one that tends to kill my machine

Hey tals,

Yeah, that sorted out the browsing problems.

From a quick glance at https://support.steampowered.com/kb_art ... -GLVN-8711 you should be able to sort it quite easily by setting anything on TCP 27014 to 27050 to slow.

Thanks for the idea of sorting by IP pelowj. Here is a larger set of IPs that you guys can plug into your routers:

208.87.220.0/24 and 173.239.79.0/24

Here is the source: What IP addresses does BackBlaze use?

Thanks again for the tips.

Just a quick thank you, I got back blaze recently and had hit this problem so was just googling the solution when I came across my old thread! My only hiccup was not appretiating the rules are handled in order so these rules need to be above other rules that may get caught (I have the rules split into machines rather than ports)

Works a treat and ping is lovely again :)

I couldn't get the steam aspect to work though, I tried using the destination and source ports from

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_art ... -GLVN-8711

For the download one ie

TCP 27014 to 27050

Not as critical as backblaze handling which is always on but would be helpful

Anyone any ideas?
