Bricked two WNDR3800 today

Just unplugged my repeater 1.6.2 to move it and it started to reboot after checking 2.4Mhz channels. The second acts the same way despite having 1.9.x on it.
I guess (stress on the GUESS part) I've entered failsafe by pushing the recessed restore factory settings button underneath just as the sys light (orange "on" light then changes to green I guess) starts to flash green. It then flashed green very fast.
But I cannot PuTTY in to telnet or ssh the router at 192.168.1.1 port 24. Ive tried ethernet from windows into internet Ethernet connector without success. Even started the router without connection in order to enter failsafe as there should be no WAN connection to enter failsafe according to OpenWrt docs on entering fs.
All attempts on any of the 4 lan connections results in connection refused.
Ideas? Frustrated and lost...

What's the easiest way to reload or recover in failsafe?
I read on OpenWrt netcat for Windows which was confusing for me due to the directories they talked about, but could I do it via WinSCP and PuTTY?
If I load the flash to /tmp/ and run sysupdate, will it work?

Once you're in, mount_root
Then
firstboot -y
Then
reboot

Should be ok.

mtd -r erase rootfs_data
to recover both

I've spent 6 hrs just trying to recover 2 routers but I've been successful.
