Install Gargoyle on TP-Link TL-WA830RE how to?

Post by Vaako »

Hi,

I was trying to instal Gargoyle firmware on to TL-WA830RE v1 but when I try to flash the firmware I receive this message:
Please choose a file to upgrade!
Could it be that the Gargoyle firmware header is not correct?

This is the stock firmware:

Code: Select all

Firmware Version:
3.12.17 Build 111108 Rel.31187n
Hardware Version:
WA830RE v1 00000000

What is the file name of the file that you are attempting to flash your router with?
Can you help someone else get Gargoyle up and running?
TL-WDR3600 : Gargoyle 1.9.0 : NBN FixedWireless
TL-WR1043ND-V2 : Gargoyle 1.8.0 : 3G Huawei E160E

Thanks for your help!

Already figured out yesterday that the filename lenght was the problem.

I renamed

gargoyle_1.7.0-ar71xx-generic-tl-wa830re-v1-squashfs-factory

to

gargoyle_1_7_0_tl-wa830re-v1_factory

and now wa830re does not complaint anymore.

Hi!

How about stability? I've read that this hardware can be a bit unstable with the factory firmware, and require a power cycle now and then.

Can you say anything about its long term stability after you got Gargoyle on it?

Hi,

In my opinion the freeze issue is softawre related not hardware.
The device is running at the moment the original fw in AP mode for months now and I can confirm that it is as stable as a rock.

The moment I set it in Repeater mode it wil not last a day and it wil freezes for shure.

If I got some more time I install Gargoyle and report my findings here.

Gargoyle 1.7.0 (experimental) is now published as 1.8.1 (stable).

If you do want to test the latest experimental version 1.9.0 would be a good choice. This is where most of the development effort is going in

Hi again!

Any news on the testing?
Another thing: Is it possible to use SNMP for monitoring?

Sorry, spotted now that this thread is on v1, I was looking for a solution for TL-WA830RE v2

The hunt continues. I suppose that v2 isn't supported, because of what I've read about it.

Brgs,
Actually, it is supported. Try the stable 1.8.1 firmware for the wa830re v2 found in this page. http://www.gargoyle-router.com/download.php
It made my wa830re v2 to come back to life as a working wireless bridge.
