tpl 1043v2 just won't upgrade to 1.12

I have a tpl wr 1043v2 running gargoyle 1.10 just fine. I bought this router from Gargoyle many years ago.

I'm trying to upgrade to 1.12 and it never 'takes'

I've downloaded the proper file
gargoyle_1.12.0-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr1043nd-v3-squashfs-sysupgrade.bin

I connect wired.
I log into the router and pick update firmware.
Select this file and hit upgrade now.
It responds with uploading file.
Then it say "upgrading" and stays that way 'forever' (>10 minutes.)

The Router actually stays up and running that whole time (it is in that state right now and I'm connected wirelessly on another computer as I type that.

If I finally refresh the page I'm still on 1.10
I've tried renaming the file to just sysupgrade.bin - no change

No error messages or problems revealed.
