Router recommendation for LEDE-based Gargoyle

Post by fifonik »

I'm using TP-Link C7 v2 with Gargoyle (1.9x - 1.10.x) for quite a while. Happy customer :)

After upgrading my connection to 50/20 I've found that the router cannot utilize my connection with both QoS & BW monitoring enabled (I use QoS and do not want to disable BW Mon as sometimes it is handy).
So I'd like to replace my router to something more powerful.
I checked hardware recommendations and found that Linksys WRT1200/1900/3200 are the most recommended routers for Gargoyle right now.

However, LEDE-based Gargoyle is in development so I hope more routers will be supported out-of-the box in nearest(?) future.

So, can anyone recommend LEDE supported router that has specs similar to Linksys WRT1200AC with slightly better wireless and not much expensive?
I do not need really fast wireless as all PCs are wired connected, however it's nice to have.

My main concern about the Linksys routers mentioned -- I read they are running quite hot and I do not really like it.

Thanks.

Additionally, i am pleased to announce that Gargoyle has the FIRST third party web flashable firmware for the Linksys WRT32X router. See below running full 160MHz channel width in 5GHz.

WRT32X should be good, however it is overkill for me.
I'm trying to find other options in WRT1200AC price range.

Maybe you can start here and filter for what you are after and do your own research on prices there
https://openwrt.org/toh:views:toh_extended_all

If it is supported in Openwrt 18.06, it is probably possible to support it in Gargoyle, but that does not mean it will be done. It may be left to the user to create their own firmware or write the support.

Thanks.

Entered "router" in device type, "available" in availability, "ac" in wlan 5GHz and "2" in CPU cores to reduce the list:
https://openwrt.org/toh/views/toh_extended_all?dataflt[WLAN+5.0GHz*~]=ac&dataflt[Availability*~]=available&dataflt[CPU+cores_*~]=2&dataflt[Device+Type*~]=router

Then manually skipped modems, all "broadcom" (as not having stable wlan driver) and some things like ZTB, MQMaker that I've never heard before.

Not a big choice. Checked prices (below ~AU$200) & availability in AU and marked interested routers in bold. Will read more about them later.

ZyXEL NBG6817 and Netgear R7800 are essentially the same router, and i largely intend to write support for them at some point, once a guinea pig raises their hand.

WRT1200AC is already supported so you could get that and just start going.

Everything else i've not really done any research on. I'd be cautious of the Xiaomi. In the past, flashing those has been rather tricky.

Not sure why you said that ZyXEL NBG6817 and Netgear R7800 are the same router. They have different features (1xUSB2 + 1xUSB3 vs 2xUSB3).

DIR-860L, RE6500 does not look like powerful enough.
WRT1900ACS, WRT3200ACM, WRT32X, R7800 are too expensive for me.
Zyxel NBG6817 & Netgear R7500 are not available in AU.
Xiaomi MiWiFi 3G has only 2 LAN ports. I need 3 minimum (preferably 4).

So there are only 3 routers left on my list:
Linksys WRT1200AC ~AU$150
Linksys EA8500 ~AU$180
TP-Link Archer C2600 ~AU$220

Yup, WRT1200AC is supported right now, but I'd prefer to have slightly better WiFi. Other two pretty much very similar in specs and reviewed here:

Looks like Linksys EA8500 is my choice.
Time to google on how to build 1.11 :)

I meant at a CPU/Wi-Fi chip level. Basically once you support one, you support both.
