Fast CPU Gargoyle supported

Post by b17gsr »

Hi all.

Time to hand over my Archer C7 to some (already found someone) and get a router that can better support our 150M connection with all the Gargoyle functions enabled.

I read on the forum to expect CPU speed / 15 to match the max throughput with Gargoyle. That rule of thumb works with my Archer C7 (720MHz / 15 = 48, darn close to where it tops out).

So ideallyy I need a 2.2 Ghz CPU get the max out of my connection. Best I can find with 1.4 or 1.8Ghz dual core CPUs are:
- TP-Link Archer C2300 - 1.8Ghz
- LINKSYS WRT3200ACM - 1.8Ghz
- LINKSYS WRT32X - 1.8Ghz
- LINKSYS EA7500-CA - 1.4Ghz
- LINKSYS WRT1900AC- 1.3Ghz

Any of the above (or others) know to work better with Gargoyle? Right now, my C7 is strictly an AP, and my DIR-890 handles the wireless (stock firmware sucks but the range is exceptional).

Thanks

New WRT3200ACMs (manufacture date ~Nov 17+) don’t work with Gargoyle (yet).
WRT32X doesn’t work at all.

I’ve had the most success personally with a WRT1900AC v1

Does the WRT1900AC V2 support Gargoyle? Afraid I'll have better luck finding a unicorn than a V1.

Any of the Asus routers support Gargoyle?

Thanks

Found a WRT1900ACS in town. Do those play nice with Gargoyle?

Should be ok as long as it is well ventilated. They run warm.

I’ve never used Asus

Turns out the WRT3200ACM was only 20$ more than the WRT1900ACS, so went with the more powerful router. Since the WiFi won't be used short term, the faster CPU will be worth the investment.

Was happy to stumble on the following thread to copy key items from my Archer C7 to the WRT3200ACM.

Thanks for everyone that posts tricks on this site.

Time to kick the kids off the internet and see how this router performs.

With QoS enabled, I was lucky to get 46Mbps with the Archer C7 on 1.9.2. With the WRT3200ACM and the same settings, it can handle 134Mbps with 1.10.x. This surpasses my expectations.

I believe that's one of (if not) the fastest router available nowadays. Is it? Too bad WiFi still not working as expected. Please report back with results as soon as you've done testing.

Here's a slightly updated post (added files description).

I'd be careful trying to restore quotas/restrictions/portforwarding from one router model to another, since that deals directly with firewall settings and I'm not sure if it applies easily as the other files. Hope Lantis can shed a light on this one.

Turned on the WiFi, was able to connect and do some speed tests, and then the 5Ghz SSD disappeared.

I'll definitely keep using the DIR-890L as an AP.
