Inexpensive, available routers for Gargoyle

Post by Ziploc »

Hello all.
I'm trying to limit the data consumption of my kids (nothing to do with my internet plan but rather with education), and some googling finally led me here, as Gargoyle seems to be the only option to setup user quotas (I'm not interested in infantilizing daily time limits as proposed by several router companies).

I have a wifi modem-router, my only need for another wifi router is thus to implement these user quotas, so I'm after a rather cheap, <$100 solution. Of course, at the same time, the faster the better.
Although it seems to need some tweaking, Archer C7 seems a possible option, but the only version I can buy now is apparently v5, so I have no idea how different from v2 this may be.
The Linksys WRTAC1200 is both slower than the TP-Link and over my budget.
Any other practical options for an inexpensive, commercially available router?
Thanks for your suggestions.

Pierre

Hello,
I use a C7 v2 and in my country (Brazil) it is still easy to find, it is undoubtedly a good equipment and cost benefit for your idea of use, other router versions, are already supported by other alternative firmware, and I believe it is a matter of time for the gargoyle to be compatible with them as well

Try the AR150. You can buy it here on the store. I got one from deal extreme. It appears to perform identically to my C7 on a 20/10mbit fibre line....

I just picked up my fourth TPLink Archer C7 off of eBay for $32 shipped.

Just specifically look for a Ver 2 on eBay (message the seller which version it is if it's not advertised or pictured), and you'll be golden.

Great. Thanks for your precious answers. I'll probably go the ebay route then.

I have just received a Archer C7(EU) Ver 4 by mistake, Is there anyone out there that would like to try out there image on it?

I will only have this for a Week so time is not on our side.

Hoping for a quick replay,

BoB
