Gargoyle Login Screen Error

Post by asayler »

Hello,

I've been using Gargoyle for about 6 months with no real errors until now. A few days ago, the http login screen for the Gargoyle web management page stopped displaying correctly, instead giving me a "Please Wait While Settings Are Applied" message, a spinning whirly-ding, and a few misplaced text boxes. I have attached a screenshot for reference.

While the login prompt is still displayed below the weirdness, it does not function, so I can not log in to manage the router. I have rebooted the router numerous times, and even ssh-ed in and manually restarted each process. All this was to no avail. I have also attached a copy of the router's ps -a output for reference.

Has anyone seen this error before or know how to fix it? I haven't tried dong a hard 'reset-to-system-defaults' type operation (I assume Gargoyle has such a feature), but would like to avoid it if possible (to save all my settings).

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's quite annoying not being able to manage the router. Although, I should note, the routing portions (internet, wireless, etc) all seem to be working just fine.

Thanks,
Andy

What internet browser are you using?

Have you flushed your internet cache?

Try using Internet Explorer 7 or 8 and make sure to flush
the internet cache, delete all cookies and saved passwords, etc.

Firefox or Chrome should also work, but again make sure to
flush all internet cache and stored passwords, etc.

I have cleared the cache, tried it in both IE and Chrome, and tried it from multiple computers. All to no avail. It seems the router is serving a bad page, it's not lost in the cache.

Any other ideas? Is there a way to do a system backup and reset (or reinstall/upgrade) from ssh, as I still have access that way no problem.

Thanks,
Andy

What kind of router is it?

Atheros? Broadcom?

You might be able to manually backup files with WinSCP, but
honestly, I'd recommend re-flashing and starting from scratch.

It could be some corrupted settings not letting the page load.

If you have an Atheros device, reflash with Fon-Flash or via redboot

If you have a Broadcom device, you should be able to TFTP flash

I would not try to backup the settings myself.

Are the Gargoyle settings stored in a single file? Can I sftp them off, or even view them on the device via SSH? I will probably do a fresh install and reenter the settings manually, but I have a lot of DHCP MAC address bindings that I should at least like to read the MAC addresses from.

Thank,
Andy

Here is a sample backup from one of my test routers.

It's from the older series - 1.1.x I think?

Almost all the backup files/locations should be similar

Use 7-Zip to open up the archive

If you don't have 7-zip - get it - free and very good archiver!

I have no idea what exactly may have caused the problem, but I'm fairly certain that what you describe is a symptom of the gargoyle_header_footer program not running properly. What I don't know is why it might have suddenly stopped working on your router... that's really odd.

If you'd care to PM me a tar.gz of your config files (contained in /etc/config), I may be able to figure out what happened, but without that I really have no idea.
