Poor SSH Performance

Post by m0ckery13 »

I use putty to build an ssh connection to my home router for when I travel and sometimes at work to send my internet traffic through.

Nothing has changed on my side, I'm running a 50Mb down / 10Mb up connection at home, same router and same devices when I travel but the SSH performance is really poor.

I get time outs or complete disconnects when connecting to the web / etc.

Is there some way to boost SSH performance in the settings?

check your routers log for connections (other people)

I wouldn't be surprised if somebody is try to hack into your router etc

use openVPN

I will check them. Thanks for the heads up.

For Open VPN how would I set it up for only internet traffic from work? I want all of the other traffic to stay on my work lan.

I can't find anything in the logs that shows someone trying to get in. I only see my connection and things like this...

Aug 5 08:47:57 Gargoyle daemon.info httpd_gargoyle[XXXXX]: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx connection timed out reading

Maybe you could try enabling SSH Compression

On the router side or in putty?

The used to do this on my router running dd-wrt and never had these issues, but I love Gargoyle for all of the other options so I've stuck with it.

I still have my dd-wrt router on as a second AP in my house. I've tried opening ports on my gargoyle router and use the SSH server on the DD-WRT router but I haven't been successful in opening the ports properly to go through and hit the secondary router.
