Ok.. good news (I think), I can replicate the problem with AP+Client. I have no idea why it seemed to work last time I checked, but now it seems to be failing for me as you describe.
That is good news

see if you were using windows problems would be easier to get :)

A couple of oddities:
I just put together a setup with:

Code: Select all

[box1, AP only]<--(wifi)-->[box2,AP+Client]<--(wifi)-->[box3,client]
The weird thing is that box3 seems to be able to access box1 just fine. All devices are atheros wifi with the latest Gargoyle.

Second, when I try connecting with my laptop, it doesn't work, but it gets as far as exchanging DHCP request/acknowledgement. If I ssh into the box and do a logread I see that the router has made a dhcp offer to the laptop.

I'm really scratching my head now....

One interesting aspect of this: if you use encryption the problem seems to disappear. This only seems to be a problem when the access point is unencrypted.

I have a suspicion the problem is buried somewhere in the madwifi driver... and that means this is going to be REALLY hard to fix.

For the moment, using encryption may be a good temporary work-around.
