Semi-bricked Archer C7 V2

Post by ektus »

Hi there,

I've got myself a problem

My production main router is caught in a boot loop. I was modifying some firewall rules from the GUI when all of a sudden the router would stop responding and I lost internet access. The rooter boots and immediately shuts down again, the uptime is too short to enter the GUI. Disconnected USB (it's also doing duty as a small NAS) and WAN, problem persists.

I was able to enter failsafe mode and ssh into the router, but somehow all configuration seems to be gone. SSH would not accept my password but the default "password", all folder dates are from 2017. It looks like mount_root does nothing. My latest backup seems to be from December, 2017, so many later settings (mainly DHCP and firewall) would have to be repaired manually after firstboot. I'd like to rescue those, but need advice as to if that's at all possible in the current state of the router.

I did not issue any firstboot or other reset command yet, only pressing the reset button some.

Code: Select all

Using username "root".

If you get into ssh, run this line and the loop should stop.

Code: Select all

This will erase the damaged bandwidth usage data and the use of the web pages.

That doesn’t look like failsafe. It looks like a fully booted device. And you’re saying that it looks like all your settings are now gone?

It’s possible you triggered a firstboit by holding the button down too long.

Please be respectful when posting. I do this in my free time on a volunteer basis.

I can't get into ssh due to the loop. It doesn't look like that's the cause anyway, as it shouldn't be triggered when WAN disconnected, should it?

Maybe I did, Is this documented somewhere? The only thing I read everywhere is "30-30-30 does nothing on Gargoyle/OpenWRT". Anyway, even if it did firstboot, why is it still loopping?

There are no data to be found that are newer than build time, /etc/config/firewall for example looks virgin.

I'm going to check the now-disconnected external drive if there are some router data on that one, but it should have been in usb storage mode, not extroot.

I am (and was yesterday) in failsafe, the power LED blinking rapidly and it also states so in the boot message. An I'm definitely on the right router, every other network is disconnected. I've been cutting too much last time, here's a complete transcript:

Code: Select all

Yes well that log is definitely from failsafe, but the first one (unless you cut out the failsafe text under the banner) is not.

I don't know if it is really documented anywhere, but in the firmware it does map one of the buttons to reset. holding it for 3 seconds or more triggers a firstboot and then reboots the router.

That's what I said, I was cutting too much text. I was only ever able to log in via SSH once the router was in failsafe.

At which point? And which button on the Archer C7? I've only been messing with the reset button. During the slow-blinking phase of the boot? If so, I might have triggered it

But even if so, it should boot regularly, which it doesn't :?:

The system needs to be at least mostly booted to handle the button interrupt, it would be hard to say how long that requires. But it would be before the reboot loop occurred in general.

It's hard to know what state the router is now in, but my suggestion would be to "firstboot -y" it again and see if that fixes it. Otherwise, flash a new version from within Failsafe and see if that fixes it (don't preserve settings). At this point it looks like your config is cooked anyway.

Something fishy has been going on here... I've attached the external drive to my Linux PC. Trying to backup it, I got an error message. Started e2fsck, and that one reports thousands of multiply-claimed blocks. I'll have to purge the affected directories, as there's no way to know which of the files are okay. Luckily, they are only backup files (yet).

So to understand and summarize, do you still have a USB drive connected and use it as an extroot?
And when you disconnect a USB drive, will the router normally boot up?
