1. You got error about non-existing config file, in router which you configured as client or server?
I used gargoyle OpenVPN server (with your changes) to create the config file. I then connected to my other gargoyle OpenVPN client router (with your changes) to load the config file. When I hit save the error appeared.
2. What was your action when you got popup with error, you pushed "SAVE" button?
Yes
3. Did you try to connect using ssh and check if config file physically exists in directory?
No

It changes the final entry in the push route lines to “vpn_gateway” instead of the openvpn server IP address.

Some clients refuse to connect if you specify anything different, and the error logs (on the client) make this pretty obvious. There doesn’t seem to be any rhyme nor reason as to which clients prefer it and which don’t. Gargoyle as a client definitely doesn’t like it, mobile devices (iOS android) seem to need it.

The hope is that people will see the error log and adjust their client to suit.

I've had no problem with my android devices but there are many different clients
