TL-WDR3600, running v1.8.1, intermittently reboots

Post by Cachorro »

Hi Forum,

I have upgraded my router from version 1.6.x, to 1.8.1 (not keeping settings, and setting it up from scratch again), and since have been experiencing my pc intermittently going offline for a couple of minutes... sometimes becoming very annoying as I was trying to do things I would keep loosing internet sometimes 4 or 5 times in just 20 minutes of being on it. (I am connected via ethernet cable to one of yellow ports)
Troubleshooting the cause, came to find that it was the router that was rebooting.
- How can I diagnose the cause?
- Where can I find full logs (ones persistent after reboots)?
- Anyone else experiencing these problems?

Current status page on the unit showing:

Status
Device Name:Gargoyle
Gargoyle Version:1.8.1
Model:TP-Link TL-WDR3600 v1
Device Configuration:Gateway
Memory Usage:19.2MB / 123.4MB (15.6%)

Thanks.

Might be stuck in a time warp.

If you disconnect the WAN connection from the router (i.e. so the router can no longer access the internet) does the reboot loop stop?

If so, follow here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=9178&p=41209&hilit ... mon#p41209

Thank you Tapper.
I was considering it, but... I have always preferred to use "stable" version. Would the "experimental" be more stable in this case?

I did do some further testing and found that it router restarts/reboots only when I use my hardwired PC -immediately when the PC comes online on the network, be it from cold boot or sleep, same effect- And then at intervals that could range from couple minutes to half hour, continues to cause the router to reboot.
Are there any logs I could look at to find the root cause of this? Not that I would be able to fix it, but to pass it on to someone with the knowledge, that might be interested.

Thanks again.

The machine that I am aware to be causing the issue, is, as mentioned, the only hardwired one I have on the Router. And I have it setup with dual boot, win7 and win10.
I decided to try using it with win7, and found it does not make the router reboot. In windows 10, it will make the router reboot as soon as the PC starts booting into windows, and then, intermittently anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes.

Anyone have any insight?
Developers?
Again, how can I get gargoyle to dump a full debug mode log file that could help us find the root of the reboot?
Maybe even have it write the logs to USB drive directory?

Regards.

Logs are as always written into a ring buffer which is accessed by issuing a "logread" command.
If you want them written elsewhere more permanently you'll need to adjust your log settings using instructions elsewhere.

Can you try disabling UPnP on the router and then connecting the offending device?

@Tapper
And and other WDR3600 users.

I am particularly hesitant to upgrade to this, due to:
WARNING 1: Current firmware (1.9.0 and earlier) has been reported to brick recent models of Archer C7 v2 (Early 2016 and later)

Can anyone confirm this is not something I need to worry about?

I have UPNP always turned off.

Update.

I tested further:
1_ updated the drivers to latest version, one version higher, now at 10.1.10.1. Problem continues.
2_ applied all updates available. System completely up to date with MS releases. Problem persists.

However:
a)_ The NIC is onboard, Intel Motherboard "DG43NB". Checked with them, and this motherboard is no longer supportted (EoL), and the latest official drivers are for Win7. However, MS did make Win10 and drivers available.
b)_ If I put this onto my Friztbox 7340 (also EoL), it works fine, no problems.

... I would like to keep this PC behind the Gargoyle. And on Win10 would be best as I don't want to roll it back (and all settings/accounts) to a newly installed Win7.

Regarding logs:
- how do I enable Debug level logging?
- once collected, who could help me understand them to the cause of the restarts?

BTW.
- Am I the only one in the community having this problem?
- Am I de only one with this NIC on Windows10 environment?
- Isn't the router crashing/restarting, due to a device on the network, be a concern that should be looked at resolving?

Thanks.

Hi mate you need to flash this build.
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=10777

1.8.1 is verry buggy.
I have 2 wdr3600 routers on this build one as a bridge and one as a AP at my sister's house. The thing about c7's getting bricked is from a old build and does not matter any more. 1.8.1 has so many bugs it will be like platting snot trying to find out just witch one is making your router reboot. 1.9.1 has a new build of openwrt as a base and a newer kernel witch will keep you safer.
