Success! I managed get Gargoyle running on my TP link router by following the advice on the forum.

I have a question regarding quotas and devices because my next step is to set it up. Do you need to know the MAC address or device ID before setting any limits?

Is there only one wifi password? If so, what is there to stop any user just introducing a new device and bypassing the limitations set on another device?

Also for remote access via dns, what ports must I forward?

You should be assigning everyone static IPs with their MAC address as step 1.
You'll need to know their ip to do most things.

Yes 1 wifi password.
You can set a quota for "all devices without a specific quota" and limit or shut down.

Depends on what you are trying to remotely access??

I would like to access the router itself remotely for configuration purposes.

Once a device is connected to the router does it always keep the same IP? if not which part of the menu should I set it in?

Also can you set up the same controls with wired devices as well as wireless ones?

While not recommended (for security) you can set remote access under the System->Router Access page.

You should (must) set static IP for every device you want to apply rules to.
You can catch the odd device (guest) with some other rules.

Yes all settings can be applied to a device regardless of its connection

Thanks, I now have remote access. Could you please let me know which part of the router configuration menu I need go to to set the static IPs of connected devices.

I plan to connect a number of wired devices through an additional switch and set individual quotas to each of them.

Connection -> DHCP

I would recommend taking the time to plan this section for your own sanity.
In my house, each person (there's four of us) has a range of IPs. That makes it easier to remember.
My range is 192.168.1.40-59. If I get a new device, I'll assign it in that range.
I have this written down so I remember it.

But, do what works for you.
