OpenVPN Client mode with simultaneous server connections

I have successfully managed to setup my WNDR3700 with a client OpenVPN connection to a VPN provider for privacy reasons. However I'd also like to be able to connect back to my LAN when I'm out and about as I used to when it was previously setup in server mode.
Is this possible through:

Simultaneous VPN server and client modes, or
OpenVPN in client mode to external VPN provider but access to LAN provided in part by port forwarding to allow SSH from WAN side
Some other method?
