OpenVPN and DNS settings

Post by pappax »

Hi,

First post here. I've searched the forum and not found and answer to my question, so hopefully someone can help me here.

I've set up my Gargoyle v1.7.1 Netgear WNDR3700 to use OpenVPN Client connecting to PIA.

I can connect to PIA through OpenVPN ok, but DNS resolution isn't working. I have internet access to ping IP addresses and so, but typing the actual url gives DNS resolution errors.

I've tried changing the Connection/Basic/ Local Network / LAN DNS settings from the default DNS servers to PIA's without any difference. The same goes for choosing any of the other DNS options in the menu (Google, OpenDNS, etc). I've also tried various other custom DNS' without success.

Does anyone know how to get DNS working? Do I need to put some commands in the OpenVPN config or firewall to make it work?

Thanks.

Did you find a resolution to this issue? I am having the same issue and can't seem to find a solution.

I have now narrowed the scope of the problem to specific networks such as Starbucks. I have tried adding: push "dhcp-option DNS 172.16.0.1" in the server.conf file, but it still doesn't work.

Thanks!

Hi,

I sent a message through the contact page but haven't had a response yet (1.5 days now) asking this question:

Is this: http://www.gargoyle-router.com/shop/pro ... d-router-1 compatible with PIA (private internet access) vpn, I want to be sure before ordering the modem.

Thanks
Paul

It will certainly do VPN. There haven't been any recent posts from users reporting success on PIA.

However:

That second link might be of particular interest to you.

Please be respectful when posting. I do this in my free time on a volunteer basis.

As I wrote here (http://www.gargoyle-router.com/phpbb/vi ... f=5&t=7276) I've had success with PIA. The problem is that it sends EVERYTHING through the vpn, whereas I want to only send specific traffic/domains through it. If anyone knows how to do this (i.e. by modifying the IP tables) I'd appreciate the help.

For anyone having problems with DNS resolutions when using VPN, the solution seems to be turning off the "Block MAC addresses assigned a static IP that connect from a different IP" feature. This clearly is a bug, but one that makes some sort of sense as the Device gets a different IP address in the network when connecting through VPN and this setting blocks the access to the internet as a result.
