How do I setup a WNDR3700 v2 as a wireless access point only

Post by mbourd25 »

Hi, here is my situation, I tried setting up 2 Netgear wndr3700 in my house, one would be the router without the wireless and the second would be the wireless access point only.

I have a 50 foot Ethernet cable run going up stairs from the router to where I want to install my wireless access point.

How do I setup the WNDR3700 as a wireless access point which would be connected to the router using the 50 foot Ethernet wire. And could both frequencies (2.4 GHZ and 5 GHZ) work at the same time on the wireless access point?

Let me know if more information is required. Thanks.

I am not totally sure, but i would think you would need to turn off the wan and bridge the port to lan, then make the lan ip something like 192.168.1.2 if your are using that type of subnet (if the main AP subnet is 192.168.1.1) . Then turn off DHCP on the WAP, so that the main AP hands out DHCP.

Another way i thought of was leaving the wan on and selecting static ip (wired) and then setting it 192.168.1.2 as the static ip and 192.168.1.1 as the gateway. and setting lan to something like 192.168.1.3 and then turning DHCP off on the WAP, but as i said, i am not totally sure if any of this would work.

As far as both bands working on both units, it shouldn't be a problem, but keep in mind that you will want to set the WAP's channel to something not blocking/overlapping the host AP, or it will impede performance.

Log into your Netgear and go to Basic Settings and set it up
Then under LAN Setup give the Netgear an IP address in your network. My network uses 192.168.1.X so I gave my Router 192.168.1.5.
