how to upgrade over SSH?

Bad idea. Current versions (up to 1.5.4) doesn't keep settings after a firmare flash, so even if you succeed (mtd write), you'll loose the connection

Upgrade gargoyle like any other linux distro: using the package manager... opkg.
Is this possible?

Gargoyle firmware is upgraded through the web interface.

You may backup and restore your settings to preserve them across and upgrade.

You cannot use opkg.
