At 1.8.1 - what's my upgrade path to newest?

Hi, on a TP-Link TL-WR1043N/ND v2 we are currently running 1.8.1 and want upgrade to latest stable. What's our best path?

1.12.x is the most stable

you will need to configure the router from scratch, don't use a backup file or preserve settings
