I need a new router: 4G/LTE with sim card, port aggregation and reliable.

Post by Beaker »

Hi All,

I have moved outside the city and in place where I live now, there is not much choice of internet options.
The only reasonable option seens to be LTE. Problem is, that the signal isn't very strong, my current router don't have sim card slot and renting/buying equipment from ISP doesn't pay off. And as I plan to build my home network from scratch anyway, it may be a good time to buy a new router.

The requirenments are:

-I should be able to install Gargoyle on it (or another WRT sowtware)
-sim card slot
-reliable: even in bad weather it should have the signal
-port aggregation: there will be NAS server as a multimedia center in the future
-wi-fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz
-it would be good to have at least one usb 3

Can you recommend something?

I'm not sure Gargoyle will tick all those box's perfect.

There are commercial solutions that might be a better fit.

Gargoyle is installed on consumer grade routers. Your requirements are bordering on professional grade routers.

As Lantis suggests I think you might be wise to adjust your thinking - it seems to me that you have too many competing objectives to shoehorn it all satisfactorily into a single device...

For your local network, I'd be thinking about a managed switch with at least a couple of 10GB ports (e.g. for NAS & a high end workstation) rather than relying on a domestic class router's inbuilt switch.

For the LTE connection, you're probably going to have to install some sort of external antenna system to get better LTE signals and this would be best with a device that can be installed close to the antennas (otherwise loss on the coax cable from antenna to modem nullifies antenna gain). One option I've read about is something like a Microtik RBM33G (which is supported by the OpenWrt based ROOter firmware) with an appropriate LTE modem in a weatherproof housing connected to your internal network with high grade Cat6E cable. Using commercially available LTE CPE equipment like Microtik SXT LTE and LHG LTE radio systems might be somewhat simpler than trying to setup your own equivalent.

I would then think about using standalone APs off the switch for the WiFi coverage but you could also use a Gargoyle WiFi router between the switch and the LTE router/modem if you wished for better control/reporting provided the WiFi coverage is sufficient for your needs.

I don't want to advertise, but ...
We Czechs have such a router that meets all your requirements:

Documentation (oficial): https://doc.turris.cz/doc/en/start
Documentation (new): https://docs.turris.cz/

-I should be able to install Gargoyle on it (or another WRT sowtware)
Yes, Turris OS is based on OpenWrt

-SIM card slot
Yes, it has a SIM card slot

-reliable: even in bad weather it should have the signal
It depends on where you operate the router (the best is at the window). But if the signal is still not enough, you would have to split the modem to outdoor.

mini PCIe Modem video tutorial: https://youtu.be/hCRCpw7a-P8

-port aggregation: there will be a NAS server as a multimedia center in the future
Yes, according to the forum should support Aggregation (LACP) - bonding: http://forum.turris.cz/t/bonding-with-turris-omnia/7105 (I have a NAS and I did not use aggregation, LAN 1Gbit and CPU is enough)

-wi-fi 2.4GHz and 5GHz
Yes, it is included in both 2.4 and 5 GHz mini PCIe cards

-it would be good to have at least one usb 3
Yes, it has 2x USB 3.0

I currently have Gargoyle installed, but there is a limitation! Gargoyle only works with basic functions and using the Gargoyle GUI is at your own risk, so I recommend using the stock firmware (Turris OS), which is fully based on OpenWrt.
