custom build...?

Post by drwin »

Hello.

I'd like to bypass the whole "choosing the right router" problem and custom build a router myself, based on a dedicated PC with wifi and network cards installed. Although I build Linux-based PCs as a hobby, I have no experience setting up routing software of any type. My thinking is, by going this route, I could far exceed any "minimum hardware" requirements, hopefully achieving maximum power to experiment with the full capabilities of this software. I'm especially interested in detailed usage tracking of individual clients, and perhaps highly-customized individual configurations for each client (I have no idea of what is possible, going in).

Has anyone done this? Are there pros and cons to this approach? Is it hard to get this software to run on a full-sized PC? Can it be installed like an operating system?

I'd appreciate any opinions. Thanks!

Gargoyle is a GUI for OpenWRT/LEDE

Instructions are just the same

Gargoyle firmware so far can be only found 1.11.x series

Excellent! Thanks for the help. I'm going to dive right into doing this and see how it goes.

I’d encourage you to try the 32 or 64 bit firmwares found here as a starting point.

This should at least prove the theory.
If you need to custom compile your own extra drivers or firmware for wireless chipsets, at least you will then have a starting point and know you aren’t on a fools erand.

Please be respectful when posting. I do this in my free time on a volunteer basis.
