What does "Drop Ping From WAN Side" actually do please ? (or why would you use it ?)

as far as I'm aware it stops your router responding to a ping on its WAN ip address i.e. if you ping it from a remote location you wont get a response - I leave mine on as otherwise if I have trouble connecting to my VPN I cant tell if the router is live or not if I cant ping it. (I also need it for the thinkbroadband latency and packet loss checks which run constantly on my connection)
