Noob - go easy ;-)

Post by Rooster »

Hi Guys, yesterday installed Gargoyle onto my TPlink 3600... v1.6.2

Can I update this version, or is this the latest my router supports ???

Also, I am using a raspberry pi as an ad blocker... on the original TPlink firmware each ad blocked revealed the originating devices IP address... now on Gargoyle it only reports the router address !! Is there a setting I need to alter to resolve this please ?

Have to say, this firmware is a LOT more user friendly than openwrt... Thanks to the devs :geek:

The devices are using Gargoyle for DNS lookups, which I assume you've forwarded to the PiHole?

There's two ways of doing this.
Gargoyle can advertise itself as the DNS and forward the requests (and therefore all requests come from it)
Or
Gargoyle can announce the PiHole directly to clients.

The second configuration isn't an option in the GUI of Gargoyle.
You can adjust it on the command line. I believe the option is "6" to directly advertise.

To confirm, check the DNS server of any client and see whether it is the router or the PiHole

By the way, Gargoyle has an ad blocker plugin, but it doesn't give statistics

Day 2.

Successfully upgraded to 1.9.2 :D

Configuration was a lot quicker this time ;-)

According to my devices, the pi IS being used as the DNS, but still reporting everything as the router IP .

Have to dig further into the command line... but little confidence here.

Thanks for the input guys !

OK, I'm gonna need spoon feeding here... setup putty to connect, but am getting nowhere with this :-(
Never used anything like this before... read several pages on several sites, and it's all Greek to me !
Just need the pi to log the devices ips, and not the router ip.

Have you read this?
Most of what you need to edit can be done with UCI.
Use "uci show xx" to view the current settings.
Use the Openwrt wiki to find out what options you can set/change.

If you still need more we can go from there

I can't help you any further because I don't have a PiHole to test with.
This is your journey. :)

I think you were on to something with "advertising" and "option 6" but I can't see either of them in the configurations :-(

Thanks for the help though... this is quite a learning curve !
