Build an X86_64 router from scratch with Gargoyle??

Post by thepctech »

Ok, I have looked around for a tutorial on how to get Gargoyle running on X86_64 (or just x86 for that matter).I have used untangle, and pfSense. Both work good, but I have used Gargoyle since version 1.6, and I really would like to get it working on the x86 PC that I currently have running untangle.

I don't really see a image that I can use as a fully bootable system, it seems like I will have to use a Linux distro and then install Gargoyle on top of that. It would be great if there was a Linux distro that WAS Gargoyle, but I am not finding anything like that.

I bought standard hardware, Intel CPU, SSD, and a dual Intel NIC. Like I said, it works great for both pFsense and untangle. I really would like to try the x86 version of Gargoyle, I think it could be the best router setup out there. I am using a Ubiquiti AP for my wireless, and an external switch for ports. All I need from Gargoyle is a wired router, with 2 ports, one WAN, and one LAN.

If someone could point me in the right direction, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Recently went through this long process with another user.
For x86, you're almost always better off compiling your own anyway.
This way you can include the right drivers for your hardware.

It does not look like he ever got it to work, he looked to have wireless problems. I have a mesh setup of ubiquiti wireless AP's, but I would like to have Gargoyle handle the routing.

There is a good web article for openwrt http://www. instructables. com/id/Openwrt-on-a-pc/

I would like something like this for Gargoyle. Is there anything like this out there? Can I just use a command line distro of Linux, and then install openwrt on top of it?? If so what is the best distro out there for doing this?

Is there a Linux distro that has a Gargoyle package that I can install RPM?? If so how would I do that?

Thanks again,
Brian

No there isn't.
Openwrt requires kernel modifications.
Gargoyle requires more.

They are full systems not just packages

So then what is the best way to get Gargoyle installed on x86 hardware?

I have downloaded gargoyle_1.9.2-x86-geode-combined-jffs2-128k.img

Is there a way to extract this to a blank drive, and if so, is it a bootable image?

Or do I need to have a fully running linux distro on the x86 hardware, then somehow install this img to it?

Thanks again,

The same process applies to Gargoyle.
Note that I still recommend you produce your own firmware here.

None of them. That is a very old version and was built for a very specific set of hardware and drivers.
