Version 1.3.0, with Backfire

Post by Eric »

After several months of work, Gargoyle is now running on the newer "Backfire" branch of OpenWrt. A new, experimental branch (1.3) has been introduced with Backfire support.

Basic features (bandwidth, quotas, wireless, etc.) have been tested with this new version, but this should still be considered experimental firmware. People who need greater stability should stick with the stable 1.2 branch.

Finally, I want to add that it would be helpful if users report bugs (Backfire-related or not) in the new issue tracker as well as the forums.

New in v1.3.0:
  • Now based on newer OpenWrt 10.03, Backfire
  • Several minor QoS implementation improvements

Flashed to a WRT-54G-TM that was running DD-WRT

Flashed right through the web gui

Running quite well, and I think the interface is a bit faster
than Kamikaze was running on this.

Fired it up and tried Wireless Client connect - connected quickly

Will try Client + AP testing tomorrow - ran out of time,
had to go into work, but more testing will be forthcoming!

Looks like it MIGHT be possible with a bunch of work on your end.

Not possible to just download and flash a firmware as is.

Still a work-in-progress on OpenWRT's side.

Since there's an OpenWrt port for AR71XX, it's easy to support the device if wireless isn't required. However, Gargoyle currently only has support for configuring broadcom and older atheros wireless chips.

OpenWrt supports ath9k driver for the wireless, but the Gargoyle interface needs to be modified to support this driver. That is why it isn't listed as supported yet. However, support may be coming soon, depending on how difficult this proves.

If wireless is configured manually on an ath9k router... can we still do qos etc through the gargoyle interface for the wireless interfaces?

Hi all!
Thanks very much for your post. I have a Comtrend CT-5361 (Brcm63xx), follow this link to see its specs:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/comtrend/ct5361
with openwrt-96348GW-squashfs-bc300-cfe.bin Open-wrt firmware (backfire 1.3) working fine. However, I would like to install gargoyle because I get lost myself in the configuration UI of Openwrt. I mostly want this working, in order to use WPA2-AES AP-WDS mode....
I found this binary files:
viewtopic.php?f=5&t=1676
and worked, however, I dint get the WDS working. I would like to ask you which are the steps to upgrade open Openwrt backfire UI to Gargoyle trough SSH.

Thanks a lot !! it will be great to know to install it to all the brcm63xx users!
