Different passwords on 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands

Post by slapshot30 »

It seems as of right now there is no way to set up separate passwords for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands (at least on the TP-WDR3600). It would be cool to see this feature in the future. :D

Another (belated) vote for an option to have separate passwords.

Mind elaborating why this would be useful?

If you have separate passwords for 5GHz and 2.4GHz you give an attacker twice the opportunity to get into your network. They can guess either the 5GHz password, or the 2.4GHz password, and cracking either would lead them back to the exact same network. Since currently both networks are bridged to the LAN the result is exactly the same no matter which one you access.

Now, maybe the feature you want is a guest network, which is seperate from the rest of the LAN, and which has its own password. That IS a very reasonable request, and something I probably should get around to implementing.

my thinking about this was to have the 2.4 GHZ network with Wireless Client Isolation on and use that for guests. then you could have your stuf on the 5GHZ network but wen thay have same passwords then you can't

+1 from me as well.

My situation is that I have -old- 802.11b equipment that only supports WEP, and I don't want to run the 5Ghg channel on WEP as well.

currently the only option would be to edit the settings via the command line.
