Gargoyle router connection is slower than direct one

Post by spa14ce »

Hello,
my problem is that I got a router/box from my internet provider which can be either used as a router, or as a bridge for my own router.
I have a WNDR3700 Router which I want to use because it supports 5ghz Wifi, so I flashed the Gargoyle firmware onto it some time ago.
Now I noticed that when I disable bridge mode in my providers' router and connect my PC directly to it, I get the promised 200 Mbit/s speed via speedtest. However when I am in bridge mode, and connect through my Gargoyle router I only get 140 Mbit/s.
I don't have QoS enabled, because I think it only eats up valuable computation power, as I am the only user in my network (aside from phone and small media station).

So do you have any idea why I get this much of a loss in speed?

I don't think it is the routers' hardware because it should support 300 Mbit Wifi connections, so 200 Mbit ethernet should not be a problem.

For clarity I will do an ascii sketch:

Setup 1:
[IP's router](bridge mode) ----- [Gargoyle Router] ---- [PC] | 140 Mbit speedtest
Setup 2:
[IP's router](default mode) ------ [Gargoyle Router] ---- [PC] | 140 Mbit speedtest
Setup 3:
[IP's router](default mode) ----- [PC] | 200 Mbit speedtest

The router is not capable of pushing full speed except when using the OEM firmware.
It is computationally stressful to monitor incoming and outgoing data. Additionally some routers have hardware NAT acceleration which is not available in third party firmware.

This has been covered numerous times on the forum if you need additional information.
