VOIP connection issue

Post by dlogictech »

Hi All,

I would like to report an issue with a Voip connection issue.
I have a voip system setup and works behind a TL-R470T+ router.
When I place the voip system behind a gargoyle router (WR1043ND) v1.9.1 I only get one way audio.
When I enable the DMZ to the voip system, everything works perfectly.
I am hoping that I do not have to leave the VOIP system on the DMZ for any length of time for obvious reasons.
I am not sure how else to explain.
I suspect that the issue may be in a firewall setting as I have been making google searches and there were some mention of changing SIP ALG and/or SPI Firewall settings. Since there are no options in the GUI to do this, I was wondering if there is someone that can help me in this area.

Hi All,

I have definitely found a problem with VOIP when using Gargoyle.
My network layout is as follows:

PAP2T voip adapter connected to router.
Router connected to Cable modem.
A link to a picture is here:
https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B4ZiQ ... 2tiejZGRFU
I have router hardware:
WR740N
WR841N
WR941ND
WR1043ND
DIR-835

So I have tested Gargoyle versions:
v1.72
v1.81
v1.91
using the default settings from firstboot.
All the above versions does not allow my Voip adapter to receive any calls from the outside world.

When I changed the router firmware to:
OpenWRT v15.05.1

Also using the default settings of firstboot, suddenly my PAP2T Voip adapter works like a charm both incoming calls and outgoing calls.

The reason that I am reporting this is because I would really love to use Gargoyle for its unique features such as Quotas etc...

I am willing to do more testing and troubleshooting as required.

Hey Guys,

I must not be the only one using VOIP adapter behind a router. There must be someone that can corroborate my findings or at least prove me wrong.

Looking for some help here... :?:

I have a Gigaset system behind my Gargoyle router and all works fine (Multiple Betamax and SipGate lines). Have you enabled stun on your VOIP connections? Also have you tried setting the VOIP providers proxy?

Apologies for the late reply. I have not had an opportunity to put the router back. Because i was having issues, I was forced to remove the router and put a different one in. In any case I have not changed the VoIP adapter configuration and it works flawlessly.

The problem occurs when gargoyle router is on-line.

I will update this post as soon as humanly possible.

Thanks for the response.

I've just tried turning off STUN and outbound proxy on my gigaset and all still works but I used to use various SPAs like you have and had problems with various routers/firmwares. If setting STUN and outbound proxy doesn't work then reduce the sip and RTP port ranges on your PAP2 lines and forward these port ranges in gargoyle to the ip address of the PAP2 - that always worked for me in the past. Its the same as when you put the adapter into the DMZ but restricts the number of ports that you open up to those used by the adapter for signalling and speech (don't open port 80 as this will give the outside world access to the UI of the adapter)

Status update,

Well I have had some time to do some testing.

I began with a clean install of the router with the TL-WR841N router with v1.9.1 firmware.
Then I connected the router to the Cable Modem and the PAP2T

The default settings were used.
192.168.1.1 for the router
192.168.1.33 for the PAP2T
I port forwarded ports 5060 and 5061 to the PAP2T
as well as a large range of ports (10000 to 65535) to the PAP2T as these are potentially the ports that the Voip uses.
The PAP2T is configured to use ports 10000 to 20000 but I used the large range just in case.
With the above settings, I still get one way audio when I call out and when someone calls in, the phone rings but when i pick up there is nobody there.

To perform another test, I put the PAP2T on the DMZ 192.168.1.33 and everything worked. Audio inbound and outbound.
But as you all know I cannot and should not put this device on the DMZ forever so I did another test.

I changed the firmware to the latest release of OpenWRT v15.05.1
I port forwarded the ports 5060 and 5061 to 192.168.1.33 and nothing else.

The OpenWRT firmware works perfectly.
I did not change any settings on the PAP2T.

I really believe that there is some settings that is on the Gargoyle firmware that is causing the issue.
Is there any way to configure SIP ALG and/or SPI Firewall settings in Gargoyle?
