WDR3600 with CG300d Setup Issues

Post by FishHead »

Hi,

I have a Telstra Cable modem (Netgear CG300d-2BPAUS) that doesn't have the functionality I want so today I went out and bought a TP-Link WDR3600. I easily installed 1.7.2 and thought the next step would be a breeze.

It hasn't; probably all my fault but after a couple of hours trying to work it out myself I figure I should stop and ask for directions.

For the moment I just want to replicate my wireless network and get it working. Later on I'll add QOS and VPN etc but from the looks of the plugins, an the copious support on this forum I don't expect those will be too hard.

Firstly, when I put the Netgear in Bridge mode and disable the wireless are there any other settings I should be changing? And at that point do I plug the router into the ethernet or WAN ports?

After that part is done how do I have the router connect? I want it to be the gateway so I have selected to configure as a Gateway but I've tried every setting on the Basic connection page but I can't get it to connect to the web. Actually, that's not true. When I was installing gargoyle and making sure it worked I had it connected by Wifi DHCP and then I could find plugins etc but having it plugged in to the modem, even without it in bridge mode, I can't get the router to access the internet. At this point I wouldn't care if I had two separate networks, I just want devices connected to the internet via the router.

I've given a fair bit of rambling information here, any help would be greatly appreciated.

You should connect the Netgear modem LAN port to the WAN port on the TL-WDR3600.

These three links may help with the rest of your setup:

Can you help someone else get Gargoyle up and running?

Once your modem from Telstra is in bridge mode you connect it to the wan port of your gargoyle modem and select PPPoE mode and enter your Telstra details.

I've never heard of that particular Telstra modem. Is it particularly old or new?
Telstra gave me the TG587n V3 and I got it working no problems :)

We'll get you sorted it just might take a few days.

Thanks for the answers so far. I'll be able to try those ideas in a few hours but I just wanted to confirm that it's a cable modem so there shouldn't be the PPPoE. Given that, I believe, is the case which should I choose?

Oh my apologies! I didn't know that about cable.

If that is the case, I believe you would select DHCP Wired as your connection method.

I just wanted to give a delayed thank you for your help. The links and advice helped immensely and when I actually found time to sort it all out it worked a charm. The modem freaks out if it turns goes into bridge mode so I've turned off its dhcp and am using the router instead.

Sooner rather than later I'll be setting up a VPN, would having the modem put the router in a DMZ be of any help in that instance?

I doubt that you can put modem in dmz . Only devices that are connected directly to router can be put in DMZ (eg phone to router).

But dmz is not recomended since dmz is fully exposed to the global net. So security is not good or there is no security at all. :)
