Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 WiFi Drops

Post by Volaris »

I have Gargoyle 1.7.1 on a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 since yesterday. Yesterday it worked for ~12 hours before doing this problem, and today about 3 hours. Not sure of the cause.

Anyways, it randomly does this thing where after some time, all WiFi devices will switch to 5Mbps transmit rate / 0 MCS Index, so the WiFi speeds become terribly slow. Also, if you disconnect a device during that period, it won't reconnect to WiFi. Signal is unaffected. Regular transmit rate is 130Mbps / 15 MCS Index.

It just happened like 20 minutes ago so I checked the system log in Gargoyle's UI: (the speed drop happened at 10:01)

Since my laptop was still connected, I went and switched the WiFi wireless channel just so WiFi would reset and see what happened. WiFi speeds went back to normal, but I have a feeling this will happen again after a while. System log shows the following after channel change:

Is anything abnormal seen in the logs or any ideas what I could change to avoid this? Thanks
QoS Tip: Don't complicate your QoS settings. Gargoyle evenly splits available bandwidth between active devices as needed. Just delete all your classification rules and leave only one normal service class and you're done. No more arguing over bandwidth.

Re: Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 WiFi Drops

Post by Volaris »

Just an update. It did it again 4-5 hours later. I discovered that when this happens, if you get near the router, the WiFi transmit rate goes back to normal. Going a room away drops it to near 0. Below is the log of when it happened:

I've decided to try another thing. I had manually set it to BGN mode (default is oddly, BG mode). So I went ahead and placed it back to its default wireless B & G mode. First thing I've noticed is that it's still broadcasting wireless N. We'll see how this does. Log after changing mode back to BG (but still broadcasting N):

Re: Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 WiFi Drops

Post by Volaris »

Just want to provide an OP update to this thread.

Seems to just be a 1.7+ bug with this router. If you're on 1.7 and above, leave it at its default BG wireless mode. Wireless N still works on that and its stable. Manually placing it on BGN mode makes WiFi give out after X amount of hours.

If you're on 1.6.2 or below, you can leave it on BGN default and wireless should be fine (bug not present on those).

Re: Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2 WiFi Drops

Ignore the above post. I've done further testing on this router model over the past month with multiple firmware (I have three units). Ran both DD WRT and OpenWRT for a week each without problems.

Gargoyle: 1.6.2 and below work fine. Wireless settings show up correctly (doesn't default to BG) and it pays attention to settings (if you tell it B, it'll only use wireless B, for example). No wireless drops.

Gargoyle 1.7 to 1.8 is where the problem happens. In these you can immediately tell the wireless settings are messed up. It defaults to GB, but whether you choose BG, B, or BGN it just broadcasts in N. That wouldn't be a problem, but the WiFi is unstable. Eventually it'll die and kick your devices off and refuse to reconnect (despite good signal). The errors resulting in devices getting kicked off are "deauthenticated due to local deauth request" or "deauthenticated due to inactivity" by hostapd.

This has occurred on three routers, I've done firstboot on them and downloaded the firmware multiple times. I even tried editing settings in the etc/config/wireless file, with no improvement. Knowing OpenWRT worked fine, I also tried copying the connects of the etc/config/wireless file as is to Gargoyle, but that didn't fix it, either.

So if you have a Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH2, I recommend staying with 1.6.2.

I forgot to add. I also tested the Polish Gargoyle builds. I tried his 1.6.2.2 and that one DOES experience wireless drops despite being a different OpenWRT version, unlike Gargoyle 1.6.2. Makes me suspect that one of the changes in his change log (whatever also got implemented in 1.7... drivers?) is the cause.

Code: Select all

2014-09-27 Version 1.6.2.2
- CHANGE: update drivers ath9k
- CHANGE: adding support for 3G LED TL-WR842ND v2

2014-08-28 Version 1.6.2.1
