lan domain not resolved

Post by joxborrow »

I have set up a network with a router and an access point based on gargoyle. Everything is working fine except for only IP addresses can be used to access resources on the lan. I have set the domain on both the router and the access point to "lan.net" in hopes that (hostname).lan.net would resolve. This is not working though. Any idea what settings I might have wrong? Thanks for any help!

More information required

Are you using 2 DHCP servers?

How any subnets have you got?

As a rule in basic networks you can only use hostname inside the subnet.

And another question, did the default setting (hostname.lan) work BEFORE you changed it to lan.net?

I have the router set to use "Default Servers specified by ISP". I have the access point set to "Custom DNS Sever", pointing to my router (191.168.1.1).

I am not sure how many subnets I have. Is there somewhere you might be able to point me to to answer that question?

I did not test the hostname.lan. My network (using just a router) always worked with lan.net and I switched it as part of my initial setup. Should I try switching it back?

Thanks again for the help I am relatively new to this.

So this is a "dumb AP" with connection mode set to "disabled"?
And you also have the Gargoyle DHCP server disabled?

I have uploaded some screen shots to the following link. Please let me know if there are any other screen shots that would be helpful. Thx

I don't know if this is helpful but the router and the access point names are resolved. It is just other things like the NAS, printer, etc. whose names are not resolved.

You definitely only want a single DHCP server (on the router).
I don't know if that's the only thing that is causing you an issue though.

I don't know how far you want to go with this but the next steep is we need a sketch of you network layout.

I would uncheck the "Enforce DHCP assignments" function for sure.

EDIT: If you use your own NAS and printer (Qnap, Synology, ...) it will be best to assign them a static assignment to a DHCP server. Then you can be sure that the name will be resolved even after restarting the router (as in the case of "ap1").
