Extend 5ghz signal strength

I’ve got a split level home, cable comes into the basement and I’ve got a new WRT1900ACS in a central location down there. However, the 5ghz signal strength upstairs—where we need it for video service—is just on the range of unseeable, causing dropouts and slow service.
I have a C7 (v4, so unable to use it with gargoyle) that I was wondering if it could be somehow used to extend the 5ghz signal strength. I could run a Ethernet cable to it on the main floor, or try to fiddle around with the settings and get it to link to the WRT wireless—which I tried but the 5ghz WDS button was grayed out in the C7 settings so I’m not sure I want to fight the battle of trying to figure out why its not working like documentation says it should—the 2.4ghz button on the same screen meshes perfectly.
In fact, my real question is if I should fight any battle at all, or just buy something Iike this on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-AC750-Ra ... i+extender
My goals are to get the benefits of QOS and scheduling rules from the WRT/Gargoyle setup but extend the 5ghz range. The 2.4ghz range is fine throughought the whole house. I’m not made of money but see the appeal of getting a purpose build extender. I’m no longer nearly as good at computer stuff as I used to be, either.
