Power. Self-powered usb hub for some specific modems is required. And your modem is?

Re: Version 1.5.5: OpenVPN

Make sure, that you have openvpn and openvpn-easy-rsa installed from gargoyle's repo (in version 2.1.4), not from backfire. Common mistake is install openvpn-easy-rsa in wrong version, without gargoyle specific files.

Re: 3g - Mobile ISP

Scanning sometime is not working. Some devices (like ZTE MF668 from Polish operators) has USB1 - diagnostic and USB2 - communication port. Scan detects USB1, but USB2 should be used.
I can't find universal method for ALL devices, alternative is detection based on vendor.

Re: 3g - Mobile ISP

Because a lot of people (in Poland) uses my builds with huawei devices (most), IMO your ZTE requires something else to work.

Can you install picocom, and try communicate with modem?

picocom -b 115200 /dev/ttyUSB0

and insert AT<enter>, modem should response with OK

Re: Version 1.5.1 & 1.4.4

Press save :)

Gargoyle doesn't display 3G option if no serial port detected, but hold valid config for 3g.

Re: Version 1.5.1 & 1.4.4

If you remove modem /dev/ttyUSB1 (serial port) no longer exists. Change wan from 3g to dhcp.
