so it's done.. ended up buying a C5 1.2 and C7 v2 running stock firmwares till gargoyle supports these devices fully.
Judging from openwrt's wiki http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wdr7500, it would seem that openwrt already does so its a matter of time.

I migrated directly from tomato 1.28 to this firmware and have no regrets so far. Stable and works like a champ

Well, after almost 60 days i was compelled to give the 1043ND's a reboot (on this firmware) since i started to experience no throughput despite a healthy 130mbps connection. Disconnecting the wifi device and reconnecting sorted the prob although this intermittent prob would happen half way watching ...
