Introduction

Gargoyle supports PPPoE connections over ADSL links. ADSL links use phone lines as there physical connection to the internet. The phone line requires special modem equipment on both ends and filters to allow the line to be simultaneously used as a phone connection. Gargoyle does not support PPPoA connections directly.

Introduction

The Asus WL500G Premium is another router that uses a broadcom wireless chip and is very much like the LinksysWRT54G* routers. You will want to use the generic .trx image for this router. The best way to upload it is using the upgrade utility for Windows that ships with the router. Unfortunately, the upgrade utility on the web interface that ships with this router is incompatible with existing third-party firmware.

I recently bought a cheap D-Link DIR300 router from Ebay with stock firmware, and decided to install the Gargoyle firmware. However, the installation guide provided here did not work for me. The problem was that I was indeed able to install the new bootloader and DD-WRT, but after restarting the router in order to install the Gargoyle firmware then the bootloader loaded but DD-WRT did not, thus I was unable to use the Fon Flash. Then I found an installation guide for OpenWrt (<http://oldwiki.ope…

Implementation Overview

The basic idea behind the implementation of Gargoyle is to do as much of the computation on the client side as possible. The router typically has a 200mhz processor, 32MB or less of RAM and 8MB or less of disk (flash drive) space. The clients connecting will typically have multi-GHz processors and over 512 MB of RAM. Even without considering delay introduced by the network connection, which do you think is going to be faster? Therefore, the majority of Gargoyle is implem…

Use Putty to SSH into the router

Goto

/etc/config

(so you can restore default firewall rules)

Change all “REJECT” to “ACCEPT”

This should make your firewall open and very insecure.

Extra rules MAY be required to full open all ports however.

This router was only produced briefly by Linksys but is compatible with Gargoyle because it has 8 Megs of RAM and 32 Megs of flash giving you plenty of room to do cool stuff. The ”-TM” part of the name refers to T-Mobile functionality that Linksys supports in their stock firmware. This functionality will be lost if you install Gargoyle so if you have a T-Mobile phone and use this function you have to decide what you want to do. The Linksys WRT54G* routers were the first routers to work with 3rd Party firmware. However, be aware that newer WRT54G routers do NOT work with OpenWrt or Gargoyle -- they have only 2.0MB of Flash, unlike their predecessors which had 4.0MB which is sufficient. If you want to use a Linksys WRT54G* router with Gargoyle, hunt down one of the old WRT54G units, v1-4 or obtain a Linksys WRT54GL or WRTSL54GS.

Introduction

This is not a step by step guide on how to configure your QoS. I do not know how to write such a guide so instead I will write about how QoS operates in the hopes that armed with a little knowledge you will be successful in what you want to accomplish. There is a lot written here because unfortunately the subject is rather complex and full of nuances so it’s what’s required in my view.

Introduction

Some wireless routers such as the MR3201A and the original La Fonera 2200 have only one ethernet port. This guide is meant to help users configure a router like this.

Initial Configuration

When you first install Gargoyle firmware, wireless connectivity is disabled for security reasons. Therefore you will need to connect the router to your computer via an ethernet cable:

There are some applications and network situations that may require the need for more RAM, like DLNA file indexing, Tor or disk checks. There are a couple of options of upgrading RAM, via soldering or using a SWAP partition on a USB thumb drive. This how-to describes installing SWAP on a USB thumb drive. This method is a bit slower but also more convenient. Your router will need a USB port like the TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v1-1.8

Wake-on-LAN (WOL) is an Ethernet computer networking standard that allows a computer to be turned on or woken up by a network message.

The message is usually sent by a program executed on another computer on the same local area network. It is also possible to initiate the message from another network by using Subnet directed broadcasts or a WOL gateway service.
