Hi,

I'm looking for a router that has enough memory and flash with 4 ports. I only found the routers Asus WL500G Premium from the two suggested in install guide but it doesn't have stock or won't ship outside the US. The Linksys WRT54G-TM seems hard to find new and I don't know if I would trust those ebay sellers...

I really liked what Eric did with his store but it only has one port and I would need at least 2 to do something with it. Wireless will be a plus.

Let me know if there are others that will work with gargoyle with good specs or any other ideas.

USB works for storage - not sure about other USB devices like printers or scanners etc, but storage devices work well

Wireless works and is stable, some issues with activating 40mhz mode,
but 20mhz works just fine, and the bugs should be out of 40mhz fairly soon.

Definitely consider getting this one!

well I got one finally and looking at it there's already dd-wrt version on it but I still think gargoyle is easier to use and has better features, any pointers as to how to install?
Is it just trx to the web upgrade or is there something else/special?

Read that whole thread, should give you enough info to get
it flashed. I had to flash with the MTD command.

I could NOT catch the TFTP window.

I also recently had to do a serial recovery, which wasn't that hard
as long as you had the USB to Serial Prolific cable.

Let me know if you got questions - this router is quite fun to
play around with!

thanks! I will try the tftp first and if I can't catch it the second method will do.

I don't own this JTAG cable, how did it crash?
I'd like to know not to do that which crashes it in this case

Once Gargoyle is installed will it update from web as usual or does it have to be done in tftp or the second method always?

Not sure what happened to mine.

The upgrade went fine, went into the GUI to configure
and somehow the configuration got corrupted.

Could not get back in, and since the reset button wasn't working
yet, I could not reset router with the reset button.

So I had to manually go in via serial console and reset it
and re-flash the device.

It was definitely a glitch, I've seen it happen once before on a
WRT-54G-TM, but that was much easier to recover and re-flash.

I think Eric should have the reset button working in the next
release for the WZR-HP-G300NH, I did some testing for the buttons in another thread.

Great, I didn't find the reset button is it a small button to push with the pen like in WRT routers?

Anyway I was able to use tftp after some wresling with arp command I figured out having a switch in between and typing the arp static route for the router then used the windows tftp command and it worked!

Very cool the router works great with wireless dhcp and great speed!

For the usb hard drive does it have to be formated somehow to get recognized?

I recommend formatting the USB Hard drive as EXT3 format
if at all possible - it's much quicker and reliable format than
NTFS mainly because its a Unix based file-system and these routers
are running a version of Linux on them.

You can Use NTFS as well, I have - it works ok also.

As far as the reset button on the WZR-HP-G300NH - if you put
that little base on the bottom - you hid the 'Reset' word - heh.

There is a VERY small hole - enough for a toothpick or a needle
to fit through that base stand, and the reset button is under that.

Easier to see if you remove the snap on base, you'll see the word
reset and go - oooh!!! heh. there is no reset button programmed
in yet though, I think in one of the next versions, it should be
supported in the firmware.

See that thread, all the way at the bottom.

There is a USB-Eject button that is unused on the back of the
router near the LAN/WAN ports - labeled USB-Eject

Unused because its button 2, and most routers only recognize
Button 0 and Button 1 - If you follow the instructions in that post
and make the changes I wrote in the last post of that thread,
you can make that USB Eject button as a reboot button.

You can also program it to duplicate the reset function as well.
