bleeding edge firmware on WRT54GL
Hi All,
I installed successfully "gargoyle_1.0.0_beta5-wrt54g-squashfs.bin" on WRT54GL version 1.1. Was it the correct firmware for my router?
Secondly, I would like to upgrade to bleeding edge version. I tried to upgrade through GUI and it seems stuck on uploading file window. The file seems to be sent, however uploading window never finish loading. On my router status still shows "1.0.0 Beta 5". How to upgrade it in easy way?
Thanks.

Re: bleeding edge firmware on WRT54GL
Yep, that's the file to use.
I'm surprised you're having trouble with the upgrade facility with Beta5.. there's an old version of bleeding edge firmware (the one I just replaced -- the problem is fixed now), where upgrade was broken, but it should work in Beta5.
To upgrade manually scp the firmware to the router:
Then ssh into the router and run the mtd command to upgrade:

Code: Select all
scp [firmware file] root@192.168.1.1:/tmp

mtd -r write [firmware file] linux
Re: bleeding edge firmware on WRT54GL
Hi Eric,
Thank you for the prompt reply.
I was able to upgrade using "bleeding-edge.trx" file via command that you mentioned in the post above, however in the status overview still showing "1.0.0 Beta 5". Is it what it should be?
Another issue perhaps? If I set wireless to "AP + WDS", I was able to add "other WDS Mac address", but when I saved changes...the Mac address was covered by "remove" button, not the same format as Mac address filtering which we still can see the Mac address after we save changes.
Lastly, I forgot to mention in the previous post that I was experiencing WAN connection drop out randomly. It seems the power led flashing - like rebooting - then the router not able the get IP address. Do you think router WAN port fault? as I just bought it then I flashed the firmware with Gargoyle out of the box. Definitely not the cable modem, as I am running IPCOP box with no issue.
Thank you in advance.

Re: bleeding edge firmware on WRT54GL
Yeah, the bleeding edge releases are labeled as the latest full release in the overview section -- I really should fix that.
I think the WDS MAC address issue is browser specific. What web browser are you using?
With regard to your WAN port problems... are you connecting via wireless client or wireless bridge (you mention WDS) or via wired ethernet connection? Also, can you confirm that you're still experiencing problems with the new bleeding edge firmware, or was this only with the old firmware?

Hi Eric,
I think the WDS MAC address issue is browser specific. What web browser are you using?
I am using Firefox version 3.0.10 and IE 7, they both gave me same result. The "MAC address for other WDS was covered by "remove" button, but on the same page when I configure "MAC address filtering" works fine.
With regard to your WAN port problems...
I am trying to extend the wireless range. So my wireless setup will be: cable modem ----> WRT54GL (set in AP + WDS mode - I added AP2 MAC address) joined with AP2 ( I set in repeater mode - I added WRT54GL wireless MAC address to this AP). WRT54GL seems to be not connected to AP2, as I thought in WDS mode the MAC address was not saved properly?
Did I do something wrong here? I connected via wireless client, not using wired ethernet.
I will let you know in regard WAN connection, when I finish configure with new firmware.
Thanks.

Re: bleeding edge firmware on WRT54GL
The problem with the WDS MAC addresses in the wireless section in AP+WDS should be fixed now. New bleeding edge firmware uploaded
I'm not sure exactly what's going wrong with your WDS setup. Have you tried using a regular AP and client bridge mode instead of WDS?

Re: bleeding edge firmware on WRT54GL
Hi Eric,
Thank you for fixing problem with the WDS MAC addresses in the wireless section in AP+WDS. It works now.
Unfortunately, after finish configured with the latest bleeding edge firmware, WRTG54GL was not able to connect to the Internet. Most likely end up with faulty WAN port. I will have to send for RMA.
Could you please tell me how to revert back to Linksys original firmware? Sorry to bother you about this.
Thank you in advance.

Re: bleeding edge firmware on WRT54GL
If your WAN port is truly broken I don't know if the original firmware will help...
However, you can download a zip file containing the original firmware here
Also, the original linksys firmware is pretty bad... if you really want to try a different firmware I'd recommend Tomato.
You can install either using the upgrade interface in Gargoyle.

Re: bleeding edge firmware on WRT54GL
Hi Eric,
I want to send the unit for warranty return, so I have to revert back to the original Linksys firmware, otherwise the warranty will be void.
After they replace/ repair the unit, I will install Gargoyle firmware back. I am happy with Gargoyle feature. I have compared DD-wrt, Tomato, OpenWrt and Gargoyle. The winner is Gargoyle!
Thank you for your help.
Have a good one.
