Tp-Link WA801ND V3 - can I flash with Gargoyle for V2?

Post by iannel »

I can only purchase a 801nd V3 now, can I use the V2 version to flash this router? I use Gargoyle very successfully on an old V2. Any advice appreciated! Thanks, Ian

OpenWRT Wiki Page:
https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wa801nd

The V3 has a locked-down firmware and requires tinkering on the command line to overcome that restriction. The wiki page states that it is supported in OpenWRT from changeset 48705. The current dev snapshot of Gargoyle (from viewtopic.php?f=14&t=8877) is based on Openwrt_REVISION='r49261', so the router should be supportable. I don't know if the V2 (https://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/hwdata/tp- ... wa801nd_v2) and V3 differ other than by the locked-down firmware.

Ektus.

Hi there, many thanks for your reply and links, I'll certainly give it a go as I have the router spare and a client needing the functionality, so I'll port my results here!

Well, sadly it appears I have a brick :-)

I did the SSID instructions and rebooted the AP, all ok. Then I tried flashing with the Gargoye file, complained about the version. I then tried the Openwrt file suggested by Openwrt, it flashed 'successfully' but died upon rebooting. RIP 801 V3!

I found several forums on de-bricking it with the Nokia cable etc, but quite frankly haven't got the time, I'd rather find some 2nd-hand 801 V2 AP's for my purposes.

Many thanks for your assistance in this matter, it was a risk anyway :-)

Kind regards, Ian

Hi there, how do I do that? Haven't been successful with any combination of resets, and the orange lock light comes on....

Gargoyle for Tp-Link WA801ND V2 doesn't work on Tp-Link WA801ND V3 (they have different chips).
I have successfully tested Gargoyle for TP-WR841ND V10 (the same chip QCA9533-BL3A as in TP-WA801ND V3).
In my case it was necessary to change some network settings because I used this router without WAN connection (it is the second router in existing network) and the router has only 1 ethernet socket (I configured it in bridged mode). Before these changes I was not able to connect to the router. I had to make changes through serial port.

Lucky for me my WA801NDv3 wasn't my first Gargoyle TP-Link.

I've upgraded stock f/w to OpenWRT, then did upgrade to WR841Nv10 Gargoyle + restore an existing config. No serial needed.

sysupgrade -f http://URL/backup_gargoyle.tar.gz -F http://URL/gargoyle_1.9.2-ar71xx-generi ... pgrade.bin
