Accessing Huawei HG612 from Gargoyle router

The HG612 is the modem provided with FTTC in the UK (or at least it is in some cases; some ISPs provide their own routers).

I am trying to access the HG612 from the Gargoyle router (TP-LINK WDR3600). The HG612 doesn't do the routing itself, it just provides the modem connectivity, so the router has to get an IP address. On my ISP this is done by DHCP so I have to select that option in Gargoyle. Unfortunately, this means I cannot access the HG612 directly as the Gargoyle router isn't assigned an IP address by the HG612.

If I enable the DHCP server on the HG612, it will give the Gargoyle router an IP address but then the Gargoyle router cannot access the Internet as nothing is doing the routing.

Is there any way to have the modem just do the modem-bit and the Gargoyle router doing the routing, whilst still being able to access the HG612?

Unfortunately that won't work as TalkTalk don't use PPPoE for a connection, they use DHCP.

So if you cannot bridge the modem - then I do not understand why the Modem cannot get an DHCP assigned IP address from the ISP AND why you cannot configure static IP addresses on the (short) network segment between the modem and the Gargoyle router?

Bought HG612 from ebay with hacked firmware which can do both ADSL and VDSL2. It is now working at ADSL2+ PPPOE with Bell Canada (have plans to upgrade to VDSL2) Anyway, this is what I have set the HG612 in order for my 1043ND with Gargoyle to see it.

1) I have changed the HG612 IP from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1
2) Changed the HG612 to bridge mode
3) Lan 1 connected to 1043ND WAN
4) Lan 2 connected to 1043ND Lan

My computer can log on to the HG612.

I have to mention that this is the configuration on second router with gargoyle. There is a wifi signal but it doesn't works

This is a novel configuration! Interesting that it works but I your step 4) provides a route around your Gargoyle NAT firewall meaning that it is open for an external intruder and (probably) the Gargoyle quota and QoS functions will not function properly.

What happens if you remove "4) Lan 2 connected to 1043ND Lan"?

Yes, the ISP will use DHCP to assign an IP address to your modem. And yes, your modem will likely be able to use DHCP to assign an IP address to the WAN port on your Gargoyle router. BUT you will need to make sure that the Gargoyle LAN and WLAN ports, are assigned IP addresses from a different IP subnet that those between the modem LAN and Gargoyle WAN.

For example if the Modem DHCP is using 192.168.1.X then you could configure the Gargoyle DHCP to use 192.168.2.X.
