Beyond version 5 of this router is only supported in openwrt trunk, and not by openwrt backfire (10.03.1). Gargoyle is built against backfire.

Apparently skysurf76 and keyboardcowboy got Gargoyle for v5 working on v7 in this thread
http://www.gargoyle-router.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1650

I am about to buy a new router it's either the TL-WR841N v7 or WZR-HP-G300NH2
Problem is that both are not officially supported by Gargoyle, but both are working on newer versions of OpenWRT. A bit frustrating that Gargoyle seems to be lagging OpenWRT in hardware support, but since it's free I really cannot complain.
It would be nice though with a roadmap when the new builds are expected to be released..

I would suggest you become the tester

That how open source works

Sorry if this came across as complaining; it was not meant to.
I absolutely love Gargoyle, which is why I will only buy a router which it will run on.
I am an absolute linux noob, so have to rely on Gargoyle and not OpenWRT.
Happy to test out a pre-compiled Gargoyle image for a router, but unfortunately I cannot offer support on the development side.

OK, took the plunge and bought a TL-WR841N v7.2
As described by others, could not install the Gargoyle 1.4.5 v5 firmware through the TP-Link web interface (wrong HW version), so did the following:

1. Downloaded the latest OpenWRT build for v7 from here:
http://wiki.openwrt.org/toh/tp-link/tl-wr841nd
2. Downloaded the Gargoyle v5 factory image
3. Installed the OpenWRT firmware through the TP-Link Web UI
4. The OpenWRT came without LuCI web interface, so used PuTTY to telnet to router to set password
5. Used WinSCP to upload Gargoyle v5 factory image firmware to /tmp and rename to fw.bin
6. Opened a terminal window in WinSCP and executed
Code: Select all
mtd -r write /tmp/fw.bin firmware

(as described in reverting to original firmware in link above)

That's it! Now running Gargoyle 1.4.5 on TL-WR841 v7.2 almost without touching Linux

after you set password with telnet (step 4, by entering telnet, and then use command "passwd"), open winscp, enter router's ip address, select SCP, it will ask user (root) and password (that you set), then you can copy the firmware from your pc to the /tmp folder on the router (and rename it).
