Bought a 3 pin connector from local electronic store and tried it this Saturday. There is no reaction from putty, so it must be either the usb to ttl I bought from ebay earlier this year is not working or my soldering skill is not good enough. Anyway, will try to fix it when I have time since I suspect I may have to solder wires directly to the resistors to make sure TX/RX connected to the ttl unit.

Thanks for posting follow up, I am looking at a used Dlink DIR-835 wondering if it is better than the 1043nd? TIA
