TL-WR741ND + Gargoyle = OpenVPN?

Post by Bellzemos »

Hello!

I have a TP-Link TL-WR741ND v1.7 router (Chipset: AR7240, RAM: 32MB, FLASH: 4MB - this data is copied from the DD-WRT database).

I have just updated it's stock firmware with the DD-WRT v24 PreSP2 [Beta] Build: 21061 firmware but am unable to find the OpenVPN option under the VPN settings.

A friend told me about Gargoyle firmware and that I should try it since it's more stable. Is OpenVPN available for my router (TL-WR741ND v1.7) with the Gargoyle firmware?

Thanx!

To install Gargoyle from DD-WRT you will need to revert to the Stock Factory firmware
http://www.gargoyle-router.com/wiki/dok ... rom_dd-wrt

and then use gargoyle_1.7.2-ar71xx-generic-tl-wr741nd-v1-squashfs-factory.bin from the Gargoyle Downloads http://www.gargoyle-router.com/download.php

A VPN will be really slow on that router I think.

Will it even work (OpenVPN) since the router only has 4 MB of Flash memory? The folks at the DD-WRT forums are telling me that this is why OpenVPN's not available after my update to DD-WRT - cause there's not enough space.

You will need an atheros ar71xx based router with at least 8MB of flash and 32MB of memory (e.g. TP-Link 1043ND, Netgear WNDR3700v1-2/3800, Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NH etc.), for this feature to work.

OK then, which of the two below would you recommend for Gargoyle with OpenVPN feature:

- Belkin F7D3302 (Chipset: BCM4718, RAM: 64MB, FLASH: 8MB)

OR

- Linksys E1200 (Chipset: BCM5357, RAM: 32MB, FLASH: 8MB)

Thank you!

Gargoyle doesn't currently support either of those.
Try looking for atheros ar71xx based routers. These are the best supported.
