I am using TL-WR1043ND v2 and I noticed there is a serious USB disconnect problem on this router using Gargoyle 1.6.2.
I have located the issue tracker for this bug but did not see any solution or workaround.

Anyone have any idea how I can avoid USB disconnect?
e.g. is there an older version of Gargoyle that doesn't have this bug?

Try stable Barrier Breaker and see if the problem is still there... if not, then they fixed in BB and we need to wait Gargoyle update to BB...
