Upgrade over OpenWRT

Post by thorazine74 »

Hello everybody:

I have a TP-Link WR1043ND that currently is running OpenWRT Backfire 10.03.1.
I would like to try Gargoyle but I'm unsure how to proceed?
- Do I have to restore original firmware?
- If not needed, should I use the sysupgrade or the factory image?
- Can I install it as packages with OpenWRT or not? (the wiki on the matter is very confusing...)

BTW, what are exactly the differences between sysupgrade and factory images? I mean regarding their contents, I understand factory is complete with kernel and all? Is that right?

Thanks!

Yes, you can upgrade via the GUI from OpenWRT -> Gargoyle.

Make sure you choose reset to defaults or erase configuration
(Don't remember how its worded in OpenWRT)

You can always flash back and forth between Gargoyle and OpenWRT
but you always want to erase the configs and start fresh.

I have another TP-Link WR841 that is running OpenWRT trunk instead of backfire, can I also flash Gargoyle from the GUI using sysupgrade image?

Thanks!

Not necessarily!

If your router works with OpenWRT 10.03.1 - it should work with the
latest releases of Gargoyle.

If your router ONLY works with the latest trunk builds, it most likely
WILL NOT work with Gargoyle since Gargoyle is only on the stable
releases, and is not built on Trunk releases.

So, if your WR841 only works with the newer Trunk releases, then
stick with OpenWRT for now on that one.

Yes, you can install it as packages with OpenWRT Backfire 10.03.1.

but these instructions are likely out of date.

If it's an atheros router, you need to replace the url
"http://gargoyle-router.com/packages/kamikaze0809/atheros-2.6" with
"http://gargoyle-router.com/packages/backfire/atheros-2.6"
